About Us

Wild at Heart was founded in 2008 by Deborah Benham (MSc, PhD),  a marine biologist, animal behaviour expert, ecotourism specialist and accredited tour guide. We are a small company based in Moray, North Scotland, offering environmentally and socially responsible holidays, breaks, day trips and workshops.

From 2005 until 2010, Deborah worked with the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society(WDCS) in their responsible whale watch team, where she managed the Dolphin Space Programme wildlife tourism partnership and the WDCS marine guide training programme. She now runs Wild at Heart and in addition is a wildlife guide trainer and consultant on development of  eco and wildlife tourism. Prior to this  she completed a PhD studying sea otters in Monterey Bay, California and worked as a wildlife guide on whale watching boats.  Deborah has an MSc in Marine Environmental Protection and a degree in Zoology. She is passionate about providing high quality, memorable ecotourism experiences which actively contribute to the conservation of nature and wildlife.

Wild at Heart Mission: ‘Changing the World One Holiday at a Time’

Our Mission is to provide uplifting and transformative visitor experiences through connecting our guests with nature and engaging with communities committed to sustainable living.

Our Aim is for guests to leave us open hearted, happy and engaged in the creation of a more life sustaining society

Wild at Heart Vision

To be industry leaders in the field of sustainable, positive tourism; providing inspiration and practical actions for our guests and the other businesses and organisations we engage with.

Create a community of people around the world, working in collaboration with ourselves and other like-minded organisations, toward the creation of a more sustainable, positive future for life on earth.

Core Values

We believe its important that our core values as individuals are reflected in our business values, and we want to share these with you so you know what we're all about. We also think its a bit boring to just make a list like 'Interconnection/respect, gratitude, positivity/optimism, integrity, inspiration' etc. so we've jazzed them up a bit. We hope you like them as much as we do.
  1. The Chief Belief
  2.  ..We are part of the earth and it is part of us. The perfumed flowers are our sisters. The bear, the deer, the great eagle, these are our brothers. ..This we know: the earth does not belong to man, man belongs to the earth. All things are connected like the blood that unites us all. Man did not weave the web of life; he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself.
This is said to be part of a letter written to the American President by Chief Seattle in 1855. It sums up how we feel pretty well.

  1. An Attitude of Gratitude
We are full of gratitude that we are alive in this incredibly complex and beautiful world. We believe there is reason to give thanks in every moment, and where there is reason for thanks there is reason for celebration, and we do like a good celebration!

  1. Deliver like Tigger
Bounce, energy, positivity, glass half full. However you describe it, Tigger has the right idea. Just like Tigger we take a positive, optimistic outlook on life; see solutions rather than problems and have fun while we’re doing it.

  1. Walk our Talk
Our aim is to be industry leaders in providing sustainable, inspirational tourism and we’re always looking for ways to be more environmentally and socially responsible. Whether it’s sourcing local food, supporting local businesses and communities, reducing waste, conserving energy, contributing to conservation projects or inspiring our guests, we really want to make a difference. If you have suggestions for how we can do better, please let us know.

  1. The Onion Effect
Our holidays are a lot of fun, but they are also more than that. We aim to provide you with an experience which helps open your heart more to the beautiful world we live in. When this happens it’s pretty special and sometimes people even shed a tear... in a good way of course. If this happens we know we are doing our job well!

We hope that our vision inspires you. We in turn have been very inspired by the work of eco-philosopher Joanna Macy and nature visionary Jon Young.
